AWS Certified Welder: Test, Cost, Requirements, and Maintenance
Learn how the hands-on performance test works, what a qualification covers, what it costs, and why six-month continuity matters.

AWS Certified Welder is a hands-on performance qualification. A candidate makes a weld at an AWS Accredited Test Facility using a specific Welding Procedure Specification, and the completed test is evaluated to the applicable code or standard.
Passing proves qualification within the variables recorded for that test. It does not certify every process, material, thickness, position, code, or employer procedure.
Understand what the credential proves
The Certified Welder program documents that a welder produced an acceptable test weld under defined conditions. The qualification record can include the governing standard, Welding Procedure Specification, process, material, position, and other essential variables.
That specificity is the point. Welding qualification is not one broad ability label. A person qualified for one process or position may need another test for different work.
Check eligibility
AWS does not require formal education, a prerequisite certification, or a minimum amount of experience to take the Certified Welder test. Anyone with the skill to pass may test.
No formal prerequisite does not mean no preparation is needed. The test is hands-on and can expose inconsistent technique, poor fit-up, incorrect settings, or lack of familiarity with the procedure.
Choose the qualification before the facility
Start with the target employer or project. Ask which process, code, material, thickness, position, and procedure it requires.
Then contact an AWS Accredited Test Facility and ask:
Does the facility offer the exact required procedure?
What practice or orientation is available?
What is the complete facility test price?
Are materials, coupons, destructive or nondestructive evaluation, and retests included?
How quickly are results and records processed?
What identification, PPE, and tools should the candidate bring?
Avoid selecting a convenient test first and hoping employers value it later.
Know what happens during the test
The candidate follows the Welding Procedure Specification and completes the required test assembly at the Accredited Test Facility. The weld is evaluated under the applicable standard.
AWS Certified Welder is performance-based rather than a broad written knowledge exam. That does not reduce the need to understand safety, setup, the procedure, and acceptance criteria.
If a candidate fails, AWS permits retesting. Scheduling, preparation, and fees are handled with the facility.
Understand the limits
One passed test does not cover:
every welding process;
every base or filler metal;
every thickness or diameter;
every position;
every code or standard; or
every employer, owner, or project requirement.
Employers can require additional testing or requalification. A transferable AWS record can reduce uncertainty, but it does not override contracts, codes, project documents, or employer policy.
Calculate the full cost
The AWS price list effective January 1, 2026 listed a $70 Certified Welder application fee. The Accredited Test Facility sets the hands-on exam price.
AWS also listed a $105 annual WeldCert Pro maintenance subscription for unlimited renewals. Recheck these amounts before applying.
Your full cost can include:
training or practice;
PPE and tools;
travel;
the AWS application;
the facility's test and evaluation;
retesting;
annual maintenance; and
employer-specific additional tests.
Do not describe $70 or $175 as the complete price.
Maintain six-month continuity
The qualification remains valid only while continuity is maintained. AWS requires documentation every six months confirming that the welder has used the process for which they are qualified.
Continuity is process-specific. A person qualified in more than one process must maintain appropriate records for each one.
Create a routine:
Record qualifying work as it occurs.
Have the responsible employer or verifier confirm continuity.
Submit or maintain the record through the current AWS process before the deadline.
Keep copies of supporting documentation.
An annual subscription does not replace the six-month continuity requirement.
Decide whether the test fits your goal
The credential can be useful when a target employer accepts the qualification and the offered procedure matches the work. It is less useful when a candidate chooses a test with no connection to local jobs.
Read the welder career guide, review job descriptions, and talk to employers before selecting a procedure. Training should build consistent performance, not only one lucky test result.
Common questions
Do I need welding school or experience?
AWS has no formal prerequisite, but passing requires real welding skill. Many beginners need structured training and substantial practice.
Is there a written exam?
The Certified Welder test is a hands-on performance qualification.
Does one test cover every welding job?
No. Qualification is limited by the procedure and recorded variables.
How much does it cost?
The researched AWS application fee was $70, the facility sets the test price, and AWS listed a $105 annual maintenance subscription. Training and other costs are separate.
Does it expire?
The qualification remains valid only while the required six-month process continuity is documented.
Can an employer make me retest?
Yes. Employer, owner, contract, code, or project requirements may add testing or approval.
Conclusion
AWS Certified Welder is valuable when the tested procedure matches real work and the welder maintains continuity. It is not one universal welding credential.
Identify the required qualification first, practice until performance is consistent, calculate the full cost, and build a six-month documentation routine immediately after passing.
